P0116: Coolant Temperature Plausibility Fault
Overview:
DTC Description as per ISO standard
Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit Range/Performance.
ECU Pin Number
72
Customer Symptom
Power Loss
AC will be off.
Fans continuously running in High speed when the Engine is
running for a certain duration of time.
Fault Effects (On Vehicle)
Reduced torque Mode activated
Injector learning strategy is deactivated (MDP Updation is
deactivated)
System coolant temperature slowly moves to recovery value of 80
degC
This DTC will also set P0115 - Coolant temp fault
Lamp Status (If Any)
CE Lamp & MIL Lamp is on.
Fault Detection Condition (Root cause)
This DTC gets logged if Coolant Temperature rise is not detected
for a calibratable duration after engine starting in a warm area of
Engine.
This fault will be detected if Coolant temperature sensor electrical
faults are not logged by EMS and based on Engine speed and
Engine load, EMS confirms that Engine is warmed up.
This DTC also gets logged if during Engine running time, there is no
change in coolant temperature
Normal Operating Condition
Diagnostic tool display the value of coolant temperature in degrees
at ignition ON condition, engine idle & vehicle running conditions
Probable Trouble Area
Coolant temperature sensor, ECU, Grounding points, Wiring
harness
Healing Condition
Clear the errors, Ignition OFF to ON, engine running for min 5deg
temperature rise
Component Details:
The temperature sensing circuit uses Thermistor that is sensitive to change in temperature. It has basically the NTC
(Negative Temperature Coefficient) means as the temperature increases, the resistance decreases. Based on the Engine
coolant temperature, EMS controls the Fuel Injection and cooling fan operation. Engine coolant temperature information
will also be displayed on the Instrument cluster.
Preliminary Checks:
x
Check whether the customer voice / view about the issue is matching with the fault effects mentioned above. If
yes, go ahead with next steps. If not, check for other DTC’s presence.
x
Check whether similar complaints are earlier reported. If yes, perform the preliminary checks with respect to
earlier issue closure.
