P0118-15: Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit High – Circuit Short to Battery or Open
Overview:
ISO Code
P0118-15
Customer Symptom
High Temperature warning lamp blinks, Cooling Fans runs continuously.
Engine stalls when fault gets set.
Fault Effects (On Vehicle)
1. Engine stalls when error is set.
2. Radiator fan runs continuously.
3. Temperature is calculated from a map.
4. Damage to ECU/ Sensor is possible.
5.TWL Starts blinking
Lamp Status (If Any)
MIL ON after 3 drive cycle
Fault Detection Condition
This fault gets detected at Ignition On when the Coolant Temperature signal is
short Circuited to Battery or Open.
Normal Operating Condition
Coolant Temperature Sensor signal will be plausible with respect to Engine
operating condition and Cooling Fans will be on when the Coolant temperature
value is greater than a calibratable threshold.
Probable Trouble Area
Wiring Harness Connections / Sensor
Healing Condition
After 3 driving cycles when the Ignition is ON.
Fault present deletion
1. Clear DTC Command form Scan tool
2. Stack Over Flow.
3. 40 warm up cycles.
4. ECU Flashing.
5. ECU Power-Fail
Component Details:
The temperature sensing Circuit uses Thermistor that is sensitive to change in temperature. It has basically the NTC
(Negative Temperature Coefficient) means as the temperature increases, the resistance decreases
Preliminary Checks:
1) Loose/ Damaged Connections between Sensor and EMS ECU.
2) Check for back out of pins at both Sensor connector and ECU connector.
3) Check for damage of pins at both Sensor connector and ECU connector.
4) Check the continuity from Sensor connector pins to the ECU pins.
